The beauty is that we don't need to wait for mediatronic walls and augmented reality overlays (although they are coming quickly), we can build Gelernter's mirror worlds now, the walls, the ground, the sky, the whole environment and all objects in virtual worlds can be alive with data now.

The virtual worlds dataviz wiki is here: http://sldataviz.pbwiki.com/FrontPage and there is also a "Data Visualization" group in SL that anyone can join.

Now that may not be the 22nd Century... but I like it.

To be fair - the 3D DC is just another VOC. But this time it's computers. The actual data centre still needs big computers and SANs and switches and other big techie stuff that give certain colleagues of mine wet dreams I'm sure. But monitoring and managing it? Sure, you can do that in a virtual environment.

However, with respect to a DC I am struggling to see the need - or perhaps the USP - for a virtual ops centre. It looks cute, and has some edge over 2D... but the other tangible benefits of reduced cost, reduced geography that one may be looking for are hard to spot. I can monitor my DCs around the world - though I suppose I can't do it from home. But that's just an access and VPN issue.

I quibble. Of course SL/RL integration is THE big thing. I thought the EOLUS proposition was one of last year's most exciting prospects in SL. I still do.

Of course, it was this sort of integration that took the websites from a limited, static bunch of pages, into dynamic e-commerce, on-the-fly generated content. In fact, the richness of function we now take as standard.
