" Just compare augmented reality to another “new” term, like “cloud computing”, and see how it fares (http://www.google.com/trends?q=augmented+reality%2C+cloud+computing). "

You will notice in that very graph, that AR is not actually a new term, compared to Cloud Computing.
AR rise is not due to merely the introduction of the term itself.

That said, the fact that something is raiseing faster dosnt mean AR isnt also rising very fast.

As for "AR" vs "VR"...not a good comparison...two initials are not enough data to give relivent results. AR could mean lots of things;

Hi Rouli,

Thanks for complement! Sorry I missed your comment for a couple of days - it got caught in a filter and I didn't see it. Also thank you for all the amazing work you do to develop the field of augmented reality.

I agree with you Google Trends shouldn't be taken as THE key bench mark indicator which is, perhaps, implied in a bit of writerly enthusiasm on my part! But it is interesting when you see a switch from a basically flat graph to something like exponential growth. Also there are many indicators (not all have be turned into metrics) that it is, "OMG finally," for Augmented Reality, not least of which is the arrival of a powerful mediating artifact like the iphone.

Yes there is the matter of when, and perhaps even if, the FULL power of the iphone will truly be opened up to augmented reality developers. But regardless, the fact that the iphone and other smart phones can offer so much of what augmented reality has needed for its development for so long is very important in an of itself.

It will be interesting to see what happens in terms of smart phones, iphones and others, and even possibly MIDs in 2010.

Now to your question of the kind of augmented reality "we are hoping for." Well of course this all depends on what you are hoping for. Personally, I am really hoping for some very cool games and some useful applications particularly in the field of Green Tech.

Augmented Reality has a lot to offer Green Tech development but it will require the still hard to do markerless object recognition that goes beyond feature tracking and modified marker recognition, also a tight alignment of media/graphics with physical objects; and in addition a quite a high level of instrumentation of the physical world is needed.

I am very hopeful that all the pieces will come together in the next 12 months for Green tech AR to come of age. But as the famous Alan Kay quote goes, "The best way to predict the future is to invent it." So you know what I will be working on and trying to encourage others to!

Then of course there is the illusive eyewear! Gucci stylish comfortable AR capable eyewear would change everything. But I am not holding my breath for eyewear in 2010.

But there is so much to do on the hardware we already have. We do not have to be stuck in a rut with markers and webcams and tethered AR experiences. So with or without the eyewear, I am sure there will be many interesting new augmented reality experiences coming in 2010.
