Very interesting discussion. I actually attended ARE this year and it was a great introduction to all of the applications and hardware out there. I have a question about the temporary "tools" that are described, both in the article and in the comment above. What would be an example of such a tool? It's interesting to think about the possibility of immediate, highly customized tool-creation from an anthropological perspective because for thousands of years we as human beings have learned to value tools that last a long time. It would flip that preference on its head to be able to create a tool on a moment's notice, use it, and then allow it to disappear once again, without worry of scarcity.

I agree with a great deal of what Vernor Vinge says here, in particular, I believe that paths to the Singularity c) and d) are most likely to actually get us there. In fact, even if we don't get to anything we would agree to call a Singularity I think we'll be on those paths for the next several decades at least, enhancing both our group intelligence and personal intelligence with access to powerful computational assistance. But I think, and it may be just a personal prejudice, that most of the progress is going to be in small groups rather than on a large scale, so I definitely agree with the statement "And social networks with AR may have a special impact at small sizes, even just _two_ players".

The widest-scale, and possibly the most disruptive effects are likely, IMO, to be in the development of ad-hoc AR collaborations, where tools become available to create social networks for specific purposes with custom state and behavior on the spot, use them for some small amount of time, and shut them down, leaving no trace of their implementation. The effect on political activism alone could be world-shaking; it would make the Arab Spring look like a meeting of the Rotarians.
